Ipswich vs Manchester United LIVE: Premier League team news and lineups from Ruben Amorim’s debut

Amorim on if United is the impossible job

Ipswich host Manchester United in Sunday’s late Premier League kick-off as Ruben Amoriom takes charge for his first game since moving to Old Trafford.

The Portuguese coach was appointed following the sacking of Erik ten Hag and should benefit from Ruud van Nistelrooy’s stable interim spell, with the team winning three of their last four matches in all competitions.

Work remains to be done, however, as United sit in 13th place, although the gap between them and a top four finish is just four points. Amorim has coached the squad in his preferred 3-4-3 system, so expect a new look when the teams take to the pitch today.

As for Ispwisch, they are also looking to improve their position after securing their first league win of the season in a 2-1 win over Tottenham. Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna was assistant manager at United and hopes to get one over his old club this afternoon.

Smiling but uncompromising, Ruben Amorim reveals how he wants to shape Manchester United

Ruben Amorim ran through Manchester United’s recent managerial history. “The guys who won everything, like (Louis) van Gaal and (Jose) Mourinho,” he said. “Nye who knew the club inside out like (Ole Gunnar) Solskjær and one of the best who will ever be outside the five strongest leagues was (Erik) ten Hag. You have different types of coaches, the same result.”

That result sometimes involved a cup or two, but never a genuine title challenge. None succeeded in the end; not by the standards of what Amorim called a “global” club, “still the best” in England. All this may have discouraged many managers. Old Trafford has undoubtedly been a graveyard for them. Aside from the suggestion that it has become the impossible job, Amorim instead came with a belief that he can end the trend of disappointment, with a confidence that did not come across as arrogance.

It’s been two decades since another Portuguese coaching prodigy anointed himself a “Special One”. Amorim came with a message from Mourinho, an open acknowledgment that he is influenced by him, yet differs from his predecessor. There was charisma with less bravado, a coach positioning himself for the future, not yesterday’s man.

What’s the team news?

Omari Hutchinson, Wes Burns and Nathan Broadhead are doubtful, as is Kalvin Phillips after serving a one-game suspension. Jacob Greaves and Jack Taylor could return.

Leny Yoro and Luke Shaw could return to training before the international break, but Lisandro Martinez is a doubt after withdrawing from international duty due to back pain. Ruben Amorim has committed to playing 3-4-3 from his first match.

Good afternoon

Ruben Amorim takes charge of Manchester United for the first time as the Portuguese coach takes his new side to Ipswich in the Premier League.

Amorim was appointed following the sacking of Erik ten Hag – and interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy righted the ship with a win and a draw in the league.

Former Sporting coach Amorim will look to build on the 3-0 win over Leicester as he begins to implement his own ideas on his new players as United look to climb the table.

Ipswich are also looking to improve their position after picking up their first win since returning to the top flight in the 2-1 win over Tottenham before the international break under Louis van Gaal.

This game also marks a reunion for Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, who was assistant manager at Manchester United.
