Kirk Herbstreit confused, Kalen DeBoer angry over ‘wrong call’ that erases Alabama TD

Alabama thought they had finally broken through against Oklahomawith Jalen Milroe connects with Ryan Williams for a touchdown. Also on a fourth down, potentially turning the tide in Norman. Except a flag was thrown by the SEC officiating crew.

Williams was called for illegal touching as he was covered by another wide receiver. After the ABC broadcast showed the replay, Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Bill Lemonnier disagreed with the call. Lemonnier also pointed out that the play could not be reviewed.

“Help me here,” Herbstreit began. “Here’s Ryan Williams and here’s the outside guy.”

“He’s not hidden,” Fowler said.

“I don’t personally see the cover-up there,” Lemonnier said. “…I’ve got two guys in the right backfield and one guy on the field. That’s a wrong call.”

Kalen DeBoer isn’t usually one to get animated on the sidelines, but he was going nuts after the call was made. Nor just yelled as the Alabama head coach jumped around looking for an explanation.

A few moments later, the game resumed. When the illegal touch penalty occurred on fourth down, there was a loss of down. Oklahoma took over and held their three-touchdown lead. Even if Williams’ score counts, Alabama would have a steep hill to climb.
