Parts of northern New Jersey will likely see the first snowfall of the season Thursday night into Friday.

How much snow will depend on elevation, the National Weather Service said, with “total snow accumulations of 2-4 inches at elevations above 500 feet, with the highest amounts above 1,000 feet.”

The National Weather Service has declared a winter weather advisory for western Passaic County and New York’s lower Hudson Valley from 19.00 Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday.

“If you are near or north of I-78, give yourself a little extra commute time in the morning as roads may be slippery or snowy,” the NWS advised.

Here are some projected snow totals for North Jersey:

  • West Milford – 4.2 inches
  • Wantage – 2 inches
  • Morristown – less than 1 inch
  • Paramus – 0.1 inch

“We are closely monitoring the winter weather expected to affect our region tonight and tomorrow,” NJ Office of Emergency Management tweeted. “Please avoid unnecessary travel as roads can be very icy in parts of the state as temperatures drop.”

Any snow will likely turn to rain by late morning, except in the more mountainous areas, the NWS said.

The rain is much needed for New Jersey, which has been under a drought watch after nearly two months without significant precipitation. The state had also seen a rash of wildfires from the extremely dry conditions.
