Wyc Grousbeck addresses Celtics sale after White House visit

WASHINGTON — The Celtics have been reigning champions this current regular season because C’s coach Joe Mazzulla doesn’t like his team talking about the NBA title in 2024. But there are some big reminders that the C’s accomplished something special — like culminated on Thursday with their visit to the White House.

President Joe Biden welcomed the Celtics to the White House and addressed the crowd gathered on the South Lawn. Celtic governor Wyc Grousbeck also spoke during the post-presidential celebrations. Afterward, chatting with the media from the team bus, Grousbeck gave a small update on the Celtics’ ongoing sale.

“I have no comment on the sale process,” Grousbeck said. “It’s underway. There’s a lot of interest. I guess it’s a comment, but I’d like to limit it to that. The plan is for me to stay for three more years. That’s what’s laid out. We’ll go from there. “

The Celtics announced earlier this year that they are for sale after the 2024 title. As Grousbeck mentioned, there haven’t been many public updates throughout the process, though it’s no surprise the C’s are attracting interest. Grousbeck also reiterated that he expects to remain governor for three more years, which was also the plan when the team originally went up for sale.

Some names as potential buyers have surfaced, but nothing concrete yet. Current co-owner Steve Paglicua has also been mentioned as a potential option, as he also enjoyed the visit to the White House on Thursday.

Grousbeck wanted to keep the focus on the current Celtics, as he also mentioned that they themselves are title contenders with a real chance to go after titles. So the C’s will once again turn the page forward as they enjoyed the added benefits of being NBA champions.

“This was a very moving, very exciting and moving day,” Grousbeck said. “We have not focused on this. We got through the banner and opening night, then it was all business led by Joe (Mazzulla). Joe really doesn’t want us to dwell too much on the past. That said, everyone in here, including Joe, really seemed to be having a great time.”
