21-foot waves possible on Lake Michigan under gale warning

Wave chasers, get out your cameras and head to the shores of Lake Michigan.

The National Weather Service is predicting up to 21-foot waves on the Great Lake during a gale Thursday.

This gale warning was issued today for Wednesday evening to Monday. The heaviest wave action is expected to come Thursday.

The warning is divided into two areas: north of Pentwater and south of Pentwater. South of Pentwater you will see the bigger waves of up to 21 feet, but the northern area will also see some impressive swells – up to 18 feet.

On Thursday, the southern area will see winds up to 50 mph with precipitation, according to the NWS. Waves are expected to be 7-10 feet with occasional 13 foot waves and building to 12-16 feet with occasional 21 foot waves.

Thursday night will calm down a bit with the biggest waves around 12 feet. On Friday, they could build up again to an occasional 18-footer, and then 13 feet overnight.

From Saturday through Monday, the biggest waves will be a maximum of 9 feet.

For the northern area of ​​the warning, waves are expected to build to occasional 18 feet Thursday. Occasional 12-foot waves could be seen Friday. After that, waves will calm down to less than 10 feet through Monday.
