This is the moment a National Express bus slides backwards on an icy road, only to be rescued by locals who rally behind the vehicle to stop it rolling.

As the ice created treacherous conditions on roads across the UK, the bus in Nottingham was trapped and onlookers filmed dozens of people rescuing the bus as it passed through the city last night.

Temperatures had dropped below zero in the Midlands and the bus, believed to be on the 450 route from London to Mansfield, rolls backwards down what appears to be a suburban street in the dramatic footage published on X.

The group of rescuers are filmed as they run the coach to help with the road clearly covered in a layer of ice with snow flurries.

Amazingly, they manage to stop the bus rolling back into danger.

There were no initial reports of injuries.

X user Jimmy wrote in response to the footage: ‘This could have gone very badly, someone slips and falls off a rolling bus.’

Meanwhile, a stagecoach in Scotland ended up in a ditch after skidding into a ditch.
