‘Wicked’ Sets Singalong Screenings for Christmas

Moviegoers can channel their inner Glinda and Elphaba during sing-along screenings of “Wicked.”

But they have to wait. Interactive screenings of Universal’s upcoming movie musical will be offered in about 1,000 North American theaters starting Dec. 25 — about a month after “Wicked” hits the big screen. Exact plans, including number of locations and performance times, have not yet been finalised.

“Wicked” opens in theaters on November 22, where audiences can indulge in classics like “Popular” and “Defying Gravity” at their own risk. Act 1 of the beloved Broadway show also features such memorable tunes as “Dancing Through Life,” “The Wizard and I” and “One Short Day.” Bonus points for theatergoers who can imitate Doctor Dillamond’s goat scream in “Something Bad.” Fans will have to wait until the second film, which opens on November 21, 2025, to harmonize with Act 2 favorites like “For Good” and “No Good Deed.”

With these sing-along screenings, “Wicked” follows the notes of other song-heavy theater hits like Hugh Jackman’s “The Greatest Showman” and the Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo star in “Wicked,” the big-screen version of the long-running Broadway show about everything that happens before Dorothy lands in Oz and strolls down the iconic Yellow Brick Road. Set before, during and after “The Wizard of Oz,” the story charts the unlikely friendship between Elphaba (later known as the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (eventually dubbed Glinda the Good), which is torn apart by outside forces. The film’s ensemble includes Jonathan Bailey as love interest Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University principal Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq from Munchkinland, and Bowen Yang as Glinda’s pal Pfannee.
