Rejected Warhol painting that caused feud with Trump to be sold

Andy Warhol had only briefly met the “butch guy” who came to visit him in the spring of 1981 for a birthday party.

So when Donald Trump, then 34, making his mark on the Manhattan skyline, marched into Warhol’s Factory on Broadway, the pop artist was intrigued.

“It was so strange, these people are so rich,” Warhol reflected on the meeting. Trump, who was accompanied by former architect Marc Balet, was completing the building that would define his empire, Trump Tower.

“They were talking about buying a building yesterday for $500 million or something,” Warhol wrote in his diary. “He’s a butch guy. Nothing was decided, but I’m going to do some paintings anyway and show them.”
