Although Rep. Mikie Sherrill punched her ticket for a run back to Congress earlier this month, she will continue to campaign instead, this time for governor.

Sherrill announced Monday that she is running for New Jersey governor in a crowded Democratic primary next spring. Here are a few things to know about the latest gubernatorial hopeful.

Has degrees from Annapolis, London School of Economics, Georgetown

She graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis and has a master’s degree in international and world history from the London School of Economics. She earned a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center.

Fly a helicopter in the fleet

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Sherrill completed flight training and became a helicopter pilot, flying the H-3 Sea King on support missions in Europe and the Middle East.

Worked as an Assistant US Attorney in NJ

Sherrill was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey under U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman.

Won a seat that had been held by Rodney Frelinghuysen

In 2018, she won the seat previously held by Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, who announced that after 12 electoral terms he would not seek re-election.

Lives in Essex County

Sherrill lives in Montclair with her four children and her husband, a fellow Navy member.
