Experiences from a country where generations live together

II’m filing this at 3,100m using a friendly local’s hotspot as the valley we’ve been in for the last three days is without internet. It is a strange thing to be detached from the world wide web and therefore the outside world. After the initial panic, an irrational fear that my business would collapse, that I was missing vital work emails, the unfolding US election, the minutiae of day-to-day communication, there came a sense of acceptance, powerlessness and my very smallness in the world.

This feeling could be informed by being in the Kingdom of Bhutan. A country that famously measures gross national happiness rather than gross domestic product. A country full of monasteries and a respect for the principles of Buddhism. Regardless of whether you are
