The Detroit Lions play at Ford Field today for the first time in three weeks when the Jacksonville Jaguars come to Detroit in the Week 11 of the 2024 NFL season.

The Lions have played four of their last five games on the road and have successfully navigated one of the toughest stretches of their schedule. They have won seven in a row and now host the Jaguars, who are just ahead worst record in the NFL at 2-8.

The Lions kept the streak alive last week against the Houston Texans, overcoming a 16-point halftime deficit for a last-second victory on a game-winning kick from Jake Bates.

The Jaguars have lost three straight, all by single digits to the Vikings, Eagles and Packers, and will be without starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence due to a shoulder injury for the second straight game. Mac Jones, the former Patriots first-round pick, will start again.

If the Lions win, they will set the franchise record for longest single-season winning streak in the Super Bowl era and move one step closer to the all-time record of 10 set by the 1934 Lions.

The Lions-Jaguars game starts at 1 p.m. from Ford Field. It will be televised on CBS and streamed further Fubo (Free Trial). The Lions are massive 13½-point home favorites, according to odds from BetMGM.

Detroit doesn’t take their foot off the glass as they build a commanding lead in the first half. The Lions forced another quick Jacksonville three-and-out after playing perfect coverage on a trio of deep shots, and promptly added a touchdown. On the first play of the drive, Goff quickly swung it to Jahmyr Gibbs, who followed a lead block from Jameson Williams in motion for a 54-yard gain, and then Goff hit St. Brown on a crosser against a blitz two plays later, and he split from coverage for the 27-yard score. St. Brown has scored a touchdown in eight straight games to set a franchise record.

Lions take care of business early. After forcing another Jacksonville punt on a defensive possession filled with big hits from the secondary, the Lions started the third drive from their 36 and again reached the end zone. Detroit opened things up with a hook-and-lateral finish to Amon-Ra St. Brown, who then threw it to Jameson Williams for 12 yards. Montgomery took over from there and got two first downs, followed by a completion to St. Brown for 12 yards, a Jared Goff naked bootleg for 11 yards and a 6-yard touchdown run from Montgomery. Penei Sewell helped push Montgomery over the line.

The Lions forced a three-and-out on Jacksonville’s second possession and took over at their own 7 for the second possession. The drive started with Goff hitting Amon-Ra St. Brown to convert a third-and-3, followed by an 18-yard completion to him to move outside the shadows of their own goal post. On the next set of downs, the Lions went fourth-and-1 from their own 45 and converted on a 3-yard quarterback sneak by Goff. He then hit Jameson Williams for a 24-yard gain on a crossing route, and Gibbs put them in a red zone with a 23-yard run to the left. Two plays later, Gibbs spun out of a tackle up the middle and ran past the Jacksonville defense to the left pylon for a touchdown.

The Lions responded with a nine-play, 70-yard scoring drive to find the end zone and take the lead. Jared Goff started the drive with a 22-yard completion to Shane Zylstra along the sideline, and Montgomery picked up the next two first downs with a 5-yard run and a 5-yard catch. An 11-yard completion to Amon-Ra St. Brown moved the offense inside the Jags’ 10-yard line, and Montgomery burst through a gap on the left side of the line for a 7-yard touchdown run.

The Lions won the toss and elected to punt, putting the Jags’ offense on the field first. Backup quarterback Mac Jones picked up two first downs with short completions to tight ends Brenton Strange and Evan Engram to move into Detroit territory. But the Lions stuffed a Travis Etienne run and forced a third-down completion to get off the field. Kicker Cam Little, Jake Bates’ kicking partner in college at the University of Arkansas, hit a 59-yard field goal to give Jacksonville the early lead.

As expected, tight end Sam LaPorta is out as he recovers from a shoulder injury he suffered last week against the Texans. The other Lions’ inactives include S Loren Strickland, OLs Giovanni Manu, Christian Mahogany and Colby Sorsdal and DL Al-Quadin Muhammad.

The Jaguars are without Lawrence, RB Tank Bigsby, CB De’Antre Prince, LB Yasir Abdullah, DT Esezi Otomewo and DT Maason Smith.

Defensive end Za’Darius Smith showed up to Ford Field ahead of his first game as a Lion rocking a Rasheed Wallace Detroit Pistons jersey, a tribute to one of the most successful trades in all of Detroit sports history. Smith, whom the Lions traded two weeks ago, hopes to have a similar career in Detroit to Wallace, who ended up being the final piece needed to push the Pistons to their last NBA championship in 2004.

Lions vs. Jaguars pregame notes

The Lions have found every way to win over this seven-game streak and will have a chance to cement franchise history with another win on Sunday. The offense is looking to get back on track after struggling through the win over Houston. Jared Goff wants to rebound after throwing a career-high five interceptions, and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson wants better down-to-down execution.

The Lions will be at full strength on offense again with Taylor Decker back, and will also get a pass rush boost from Za’Darius Smith in his Lions debut. Tight end Sam LaPorta (shoulder) is out, but other key contributors are ready to go, including left tackle Taylor Decker, who missed last week.

The Jaguars limp into the game on a losing streak and without their regular quarterback. Jacksonville, coached by Doug Pederson, is in contention for the first general election for the third time in the past five years after mixing plenty of excruciatingly close losses with a few blowouts. Last week, the Jaguars jumped out to an early lead on the Vikings but never scored again in the 12-7 loss. Jones was 14-for-22 for 111 yards and two interceptions.

Lions vs. Jaguar’s prediction

Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press: Coaches can give all the lip service they want to the fact that this is the NFL and don’t take opponents for granted and that the other guys get paid too. However, the reality is that the Lions may be the best team in the NFL and the Jaguars may be the worst. They’ve had several close games, including against the Vikings, Eagles and Packers in the last three weeks, but they’re also starting a backup quarterback and were blown out on the road by the best offense they faced (Buffalo Bills). If the protection is there, Goff should have a big day and the defense looks poised for another couple of takeaways in a game that should be over by the third quarter. The pick: Lions 38, Jaguars 17.

Lions vs. Jaguar’s injury report

The Lions ruled out tight end Sam LaPorta along with Brodric Martin, Emmanuel Moseley and Ifeatu Melifonwu on Friday. LaPorta left the Texans game early with a shoulder injury he described as “nothing major.” Left tackle Taylor Decker is back in the lineup and newly acquired defensive end Za’Darius Smith will make his debut after sitting out last week.

For the Jags, Lawrence is the biggest absence. Running back Tank Bigsby is out and guard Ezra Cleveland is listed as questionable with an ankle injury.
