Winter Storm Approaching Sunday, Winter Storm Warning Issued

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Cascades, including the towns of La Pine, Sisters and Sunriver. All mountain passes will be affected by as much as 8 – 15″ of snow, while the lower elevations could see 3 – 5″. Snow will begin mid-morning Sunday and linger into the night. There will be some rain at the start of the event, but a transition to snow will occur later in the afternoon as a cold front arrives. Behind the front, the snow will be, and due to the rain coming before the snow, we may see some icy conditions below.

The rain will keep snow totals down from what is expected by the computer models, but it also brings the variation of icy roads. Hazardous travel tomorrow and Monday due to the slippery nature of the roads. Pay attention, especially on less traveled roads that may not have been treated or maintained.

This is a complicated weather pattern as the region will be in the 50s early in the day Sunday before the front moves through. The warm sector is pushed away by the front around 3pm and this is when the transition to heavy and wet snow begins. It won’t be a flash freeze, but more of a gradual transition, but there could still be icy conditions.

The snow is expected to continue on and off until Monday.

Be safe and alert.
