Charli XCX clarifies what ‘Brat’ is in ‘SNL’ opening monologue

Charli XCX is here to finally clear up what’s what “brat” or night.

In her tight opening monologue with her initial hosting efforts on Saturday Night Live (which was no worse as a musical guest), she decreed Martha Stewart’s recent feud with a journalist as decidedly brat.

“You might know me from my album Abruptbut don’t worry if you don’t. There is nothing wrong with being straight,” she began in the intro, joking about her niche popularity among the queer community.

So what is a brat?

“Honestly, it’s like an attitude,” the Grammy nominee said. “It’s a mood. For example, the new Martha Stewart documentary: When Martha gets mad about an old magazine article and she says she’s glad the journalist who wrote it is dead, to are brats. And then on Friday, when that very reporter responded and said, ‘Hey, I’m alive, bitch,’ it’s extremely brat.”

Unfortunately though SNL alum Kyle Mooney fails the “anyone can be brat” test after a brief surprise appearance.

“Brat is all about being vulnerable, so this is really a dream come true,” Charli XCX said, poking fun at her “party girl” persona. “I’m so excited to be here and I’m not used to being out so early on a Saturday night, but for you guys it’s worth it.”

Elsewhere during the monologue, she apparently hit back at those who might have criticized her for her use of autotune: “Speaking of singing, I want to take a moment to thank someone who has been there for me my whole career: autotune. Autotune does all sounds better, even really bad news – like this – look: I’m breaking up with you because I’m trying to get in touch with your dad.”
