Which 3-3-5 defense will do best? Cincinnati Bearcats or Iowa State Cyclones?

The Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year last season, Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another as he defeated UC at Nippert Stadium 30-10. The Cyclones defense held UC to season lows in rushing (115 yards) and passing (99).

The top offensive holdover from that box score is running back Corey Kiner, who is the No. 2 in the nation in forced missed tackles with 50 and is 217 yards away from another 1,000-yard season. Kiner was invited to Hula bowl this week.

To bolster UC’s defense, head coach Scott Satterfield plucked Tyson Veidt from the Iowa State staff to run a 3-3-5 for the Bearcats. There is a lot of familiarity on both sides, and Satterfield and Cyclones coach Matt Campbell once served on the same staff in Toledo.

Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Iowa State predictions

The Bearcats are coming off a game I predicted they would win in the preseason and going to a game I had listed as a loss. The timing isn’t ideal either, as Iowa State went from undefeated and ranked to a two-game losing streak. They gave up an uncharacteristic 45 points to Kansas last weekend. In Iowa State’s favor, they are at home. In UC’s favor, they can apparently be scored on. In Iowa State’s favor, UC gave away points last week on turnovers. In UC’s favor, the odds would be against them giving the opposition 17 points again. It’s crunch time for the Bearcats, and most Big 12 games are up for grabs. It wouldn’t surprise me, but I can’t choose.Forecast: Iowa State 28, Cincinnati 24
