A world of royalty, maidens, knights and fictional creatures comes to life at the Carolina Renaissance Festival, a 16th-century arts and entertainment festival in Charlotte.

Festival goers are turning heads this year. Their bold fashion choices range from creatively crafted period pieces to whimsical fantasy ensembles that channel the essence of the Renaissance era.

Royalties

A popular choice of clothing was outfits with a royal style.

Women adorned outfits that showcased rich velvets, corsets and lace petticoats with gold, sapphire, burgundy and emerald as common dress colors to emphasize prestige and nobility. Dresses were bejeweled, with laced bodices and cut sleeves to reveal contrasting material underneath, a popular fashion trend during the Renaissance period.

Square and rounded necklines with lace or frills helped achieve a sophisticated look. The dresses had slight differences in fabric for modern comfort when compared to genuine Renaissance wear.

Men chose shirts with billowing sleeves and breeches in different colors that reflected different classes of people during the Renaissance. They paired patterned and embellished button-up doublets with knee-high boots. Belts, feathered hats and sashes were added to accessorize and display authentic style choices from history.

Knights

Some participants dressed up as knights for the festival and chose to wear suits of armor. Although much lighter than true armor worn in the past, steel and chain breastplates added an enhanced flair to their genre of clothing. Other accessories, such as helmets and fake swords, helped complete a total transformation into a Renaissance knight.

Common people

Other festival participants went another way and dressed up like the common people of Europe. Many were wearing linen and woolen dresses and tunics it was accompanied by leather belts fastened around the waist.Accessories such as straw hats and hoods were worn to complete the look. In addition, they wore shawls and cloaks to keep warm if needed.

The Fantastic

The Renaissance Festival set a stage to showcase a wide range of historical fashion but also did the same for festival goers in cosplay. Most contestants participated wearing traditional Renaissance clothing, but many also wore fantasy outfits that combined mythology and folklore with Renaissance-inspired elements, resulting in colorful and creative attire.

The most popular expressions of fantasy-inspired outfits were the cosplay of characters from elven and fairy kingdoms. These costumes trusted designs from the Renaissance at the same time with “magical” details.

Most of elven cosplays incorporated colors like green, blue and silver, with long, loose dresses made with shiny fabrics. The dresses had the fine embroidery of vines, flowers and leaves to represent nature. Handmade pointed ears and flower crowns with gold and silver gemstones was also worn to make the cosplay more accurate. Accessories included arm cuffs, longbows and artificial swords.

Fairies were dressed in bright colors that brought a fantastic elegance. The most common costume colors were various shades of pink, purple and turquoise, which was decorated with glitter and pearls. Many wore prominent wings made of different materials. Most of the wings were made with imitation feathers, others with thread, fabric and fairy lights.

Jewelry

An integral part of the clothing at the festival jewelry was worn to complete the look. Many women wore necklaces, especially handmade chokers. Rings and brooches made with colorful stones enhanced the elegance of their ensembles. Men also wore jewelery at the festival, especially lockets and signet rings, to add to the ‘nobility’ look.

The festival was a tapestry of historical fashion and creativity. The attention to detail in the costumes was nothing short of spectacular. The different styles captured the spirit of the Renaissance and demonstrated aspects of its era and its representation in today’s world. The 2024 Carolina Renaissance Festival was a breathtaking reflection of fashion through the ages.
