Whoopi Goldberg claims the bakery ‘refused’ to make her birthday dessert

Whoopi Goldberg’s birthday present was bittersweet this year.

While celebrating her 69th birthday on The view on Wednesday, November 13, the TV personality claimed that the bakery that made her birthday treats initially refused to take her order, speculating that it was because of her political views. The company – which the host chose not to name, but was identified by Weekly entertainment as Holtermanns Bakery — later denied this claim.

After an hour of festivities that included Goldberg giving the crowd his favorite things and friend James Monroe Iglehart performing the title number from Broadway’s A Wonderful World: Louis Armstrong Musical, the view’s co-hosts enjoyed a dessert close to the actress’ heart: Charlotte Russe.

The dessert — a trifle treat with layers of sponge cake, Bavarian cream and fruit — was one of Goldberg’s mother’s favorites growing up, the star explained, before revealing that she had a hard time getting her hands on the cherry topping from the Staten Island bakery .

“Now let me tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political views and the place that made these refused to make them for me,” the actress explained as the audience gasped.

Her co-hosts also had strong reactions to the information, with Sunny Hostin asking, “Oh, really?” and Sara Haines immediately spat out her bite, drawing laughs from the audience.

“They said their furnaces had broken down, all kinds of things, but people went and got them anyway,” Goldberg explained, “that’s why I don’t tell you who made them.”

But, the one Sister law Stjerne theorized, “it can’t be because I’m a woman, but maybe they didn’t like my politics.”

“But it’s okay,” Goldberg continued, “because you know what? Look, it’s my mom’s celebration. Pick them up and celebrate with me and my mom. Thanks to everyone for celebrating my birthday today.”

After the actress claimed on air that the bakery rejected her because of her politics and used technical difficulties as an excuse, Holtermann’s Bakery owner Jill Holtermann denied this, telling EW that “it was not because of political” affiliations, but rather because “we had trouble with our boilers.”

That’s what Holtermann said The view co-host originally asked for treats for a talk show appearance on Nov. 6 and as well as her birthday broadcast, which the baker refused to do because she “didn’t want to make a commitment that I can’t fulfill.”

“I told Whoopi, ‘I can’t do it right now,'” she told the outlet. “We have so many things going on with my boiler,” because the building is from 1930, so when she called me, I had no idea (if we could) bake everything.”

The bakery’s owner also confirmed Goldberg’s claim that a woman, whom neither identified, came to pick up approximately 50 Charlotte Russe desserts on the morning of November 13, which the owner said she was ultimately able to to make despite the boiler problems.

She also told EW that she was not aware of who the woman was or who had any connection to Goldberg or The view.

PEOPLE have turned to Holtermanns Bakery and to The view for further comment, but did not immediately hear back from them either.
