‘Cobra Kai’ creators tease Kwon and Tory in Barcelona: ‘Karate high jinks ensue’

It seems that Miyagi-Do captain Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan) may have more to worry about than scoring points on the mat when Cobra Kai Season 6 returns on Nov. 15.

In the first five episodes of the last season, Robby and his fellow students at Miyagi-Do trained for the prestigious Sekai Taikai tournament – but when they arrived in Barcelona, they found that Tory (Peyton List) had defected to The Cobra Kai dojo, led by “No Mercy” duo John Kreese (Martin Kove) and Kim Da-Eun (Alicia Hannah-Kim).

That’s bad news for Miagyi-Do senseis Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), but it could be even worse news for Robby and Tory’s romantic relationship. Fans of the duo weren’t happy with the brief shot in the Season 6 Part 2 trailer of Kwon (Brandon H. Lee) with his arm around Tory — and they might have reason to worry. “With Robby and Tory in a negative spot, it allows Kwon to step in there,” says Hayden Schlossberg, who created Cobra Kai with Jon Hurwitz and Josh Heald.

The Big 3 surrendered Weekly entertainment with some additional teases about the new episodes, including what’s ahead for Tory and Robby, those “next-level karate matches” in Sekai Taikai, and Daniel’s search for the truth about Mr. Miyagi.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: In a recent preview clip, we met Zara (Rayna Vallandingham) and Axel (Patrick Luwis) from the Iron Dragons. Tell us a little bit about how Zara and Axel will get along in part two.

JON HURWITZ: The Iron Dragons are one of the other dojos in Sekai Taikai and you will quickly see that they are a force to be reckoned with. They are a dojo based in Hong Kong with the best of the best students from around the world. Many of the dojos are representative of different countries, but this dojo has a slightly more international flare. They have been very successful in Sekai Taikai for quite some time. They are led by Lewis Tan’s Sensei Wolf, who is a force in his own right.

We’ve had this rivalry between Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do for so long, but you’re on the world stage right now. There will be other dojos out there, and Iron Dragons is only the tip of the iceberg of the dojos our competitors have to worry about.

From the little bit we see of him in the trailer, it looks like Sensei Wolf is from the “No Mercy” teacher school.

Josh Heald: Their sensei is a three-time former Sekai Taikai champion and a powerful figure in the international martial arts community. You’ll see pretty early on that Sensei Wolf takes a page from the book of someone like Kreese more than someone like Daniel in terms of his approach to leadership and the way he demands the best from his students. But (his method) has also worked and his dojo has been dominant and he has attracted the great talent. We’ve compared them to a kind of dynasty, like a New England Patriots under (Bill) Belichick and (Tom) Brady. There’s something in the special sauce that makes them work, but it might not be the most emotionally healthy either.

Tory-Robby shippers lost their minds from a shot in the trailer that appears to show Kwon and Tori canoodling. What can you tell us about it?

HAYDEN SCHLOSSBERG: Karate high jinks occur when you go abroad. (Laughing) You take a bunch of teenagers and put them in Barcelona for a karate tournament and they’re all in a hotel — different relationships start to form. I won’t say too much about what’s going to happen, but there’s always drama off the mat. I think with Robby and Tory in a negative spot, it allows Kwon to step in there. We’ll see how that plays out, but be prepared for a little bit of off-the-mat drama.

Looking at what we see in the trailer, the Sekai Taikai battles look clever – especially what happens with the elevated platform.

HURWITZ: It’s so funny. In the writers’ room, it was important to us to come up with next-level karate matches, competitions that set this apart from what you’ve seen in All Valley. We came up with this idea for this high platform battle and didn’t know if we would be able to pull it off because we have the budget for a 22-minute comedy. So everything we do in the stunt world already stretches us in big ways.

But we got our line producer in Atlanta, Bob Wilson, and we went around the easternwhich is where we filmed. He looks up there and he says, “It’s a concert venue. There have been platforms that have been lowered from the ceiling of this place. Maybe we could accomplish what we’re trying to do.” I’m not going to go into the details of that fight, but as Mike Barnes said in part one, the Sekai Taikai is a dangerous place and our fighters are put in positions that are at a level of danger quite a bit higher than what they have dealt with before.

In the fifth episode, Daniel was stunned to find Mr. Miyagi’s Bloodstained Headband from Sekai Taikai. Give us a little tease of where this story is headed.

POUR: We never drop a story so the mystery is followed. Daniel is someone who is very curious and will ask deep questions of anyone and everyone to see where it can take him. Explosive things happen as a result of him digging a little further than perhaps he should.

All five episodes of Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 2 premieres Friday, November 15 on Netflix.
