Greece vs England LIVE: Score and latest updates as Ollie Watkins scores early in must-win Nations League game

Lee Carsley has yet to speak to Thomas Tuchel about the England squad

England travel to Greece for a must-win Nations League clash tonight. After a defeat at Wembley to the same opponents, the Three Lions must win in Athens if they hope to automatically qualify for promotion.

Interim boss Lee Carsley takes charge of the national side for his final camp and will be hoping for a positive end to his time in charge of the senior team.

Carsley has already handed out a number of debuts during his time in charge and could still provide an opportunity for six uncapped members of the squad, including Curtis Jones, Lewis Hall and Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

With a number of players, including Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, pulling out through injury, you can expect a somewhat unfamiliar line-up for tonight’s game, with the defense and midfield in particular getting a shake-up.

Greece 0-1 England

Jude Bellingham darts in behind and is fed the ball. He carries it into the box and looks for Ollie Watkins, but the pass is not on.

It looks like a safe goal but Konstantinos Koulierakis sprints back and pokes the ball away from Bellingham before he can shoot!

It’s a nice move from Greece. Kostas Tsimikas is played into space on the left and runs at Kyle Walker. He slips a pass into the feet of Vangelis Pavlidis, who puts it back to Tsimikas, who continues his run into the box.

Tsimikas shoots and Jordan Pickford sticks out a strong right hand to turn the ball behind.

27 mins: The Greek crowd starts to get animated. The hosts see more possession and manage to pass the ball to Lazaros Rota as he comes forward on the right.

Rota dances from inside the wing and then shoots. It’s not a good shot and he pulls it off target.

From the spot kick, Jordan Pickford takes his time getting the ball back into play and is cautioned for time wasting. Only 27 minutes have been played!

24 min: Giorgos Masouras drifts out on the right and waits for the ball to come over the top. It does, and the pass makes Rico Lewis hesitate.

He decides to let the ball run through and then holds the ground long enough to punch the ball out for a throw-in.

21 mins: Greece have conceded their first goal at home since Youssouf Fofana scored against them for France in November 2023. It’s almost a year since they went behind at home.

England will be looking to extend their lead and banish memories of that defeat at Wembley last month.

18 min: Gordon really likes himself against Rota. He looks to go wide this time but just overshoots the ball as Rota holds on.

England threw men into the box and seem very hungry for goals tonight. A good start for the visitors.

“Ollie Watkins scored with his first touch of the ball, offering Lee Carsley instant vindication after benching Harry Kane, although it was the type of goal Kane could have scored too.

“It’s not a particularly hostile atmosphere in Athens but Conor Gallagher’s needless yellow card for kicking the ball away brought volume and means two of England’s midfield trio are already booked.”

15 min: England need another goal to move ahead of Greece in the table as they look to improve on their goal difference. Should they win this match, the higher the margin of victory the better for England.

Gallagher commits a free-kick against Kostas Tsimikas as the left-back goes down the left wing. He needs to be careful as he already has a yellow card.

The free kick for Greece is lifted into the box and Jordan Pickford sprints out to clear it.

Bellingham and Christos Zafeiris were two men fighting and the Englishman is not happy with the referee’s decision. He hurls a few verbal words at the official and is shown a card as a result.

Conor Gallagher joins him in the book soon after to seemingly limit a quick free-kick from being taken. The referee seems briefly happy tonight.
