Massive Verizon Fios Outage Reported Across US East Coast, Millions Affected

Millions of people on the US East Coast are reporting outages on Verizon Fio’s internet. According to Down Detector, the reports started coming in from early Tuesday morning (local time). The US heat map shows users reporting problems mainly in Boston, New York and Washington. The area covers an area of nearly 300 miles or 500 kilometers from Philadelphia and Pennsylvania to Richmond and Virginia. Verizon’s wireless network is one of the largest in the United States, covering 70 percent of the country with its LTE network.

Several users started writing about the outage on X (formerly Twitter).

“Verizon has us all night owls and insomniacs because there is an apparent bug, nationwide. It’s definitely here in DC, MD and I believe Virginia,” one user commented. “This verizon internet outage seems unusual. Also annoying,” said another.

“Huge internet outage for Verizon happening overnight. Been out for over two hours already,” said a third user.

In response to one of the users, Verizon said: “There is either an outage or network maintenance affecting your area. We do not have the full details yet. Our apologies for the inconvenience this is causing. We are trying to get all the information from our network team so we can give you all an update.”

Reports of the outages spiked between midnight and 2 a.m. EST, with the network receiving thousands of complaints during that time, according to Down detector.

90 percent of these complaints relate to internet services, nine percent were described as “total blackout”, while one percent affected TV streaming.

Verizon Fios is a fiber optic Internet, TV and phone service provided by the company.
