Starbucks app down as fast food chain launches its Holiday Menu: Drama explained

Global coffee chain Starbucks launched its holiday menu on November 7, 2024, and on the first day, the company’s mobile app was down. Several users reported that they were unable to order from the brand’s online app.

This annual menu launch is almost like a ritual for many Starbucks goers. Some fans are kicking off the festive season with this special Christmas menu. However, due to the outage, customers were frustrated as the app’s mobile ordering and payment related features were down.

Error in the Starbucks app

Reports of the app bug first started to surface around 8 a.m. ET, which is considered to be in the middle of the morning coffee rush.

Downdetector, a website that tracks outages of online websites or apps, reported a noticeable increase in complaints about app performance.

Social media users in cities such as Washington, DC and New York complained that they were unable to place orders or purchase Christmas season items through the app. Most of them encountered messages that said:

“Omg Starbucks mobile ordering is down and I’m about to cry.” A frustrated customer reported.

More customers took to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to share their situations. One such user made a post that said:

“Starbucks app is down the day you drop the holiday menu is criminal lol.”

The company acknowledged the app problems on social media. For disappointed customers, however, it gave only a small explanation for the disruption. Below is what the company had to mention on social platforms:

“The pre-order and pay feature in our app is currently experiencing a temporary outage.”

The coffee chain further encouraged customers to order directly from their physical stores. However, no timeline was officially given to resolve the outage.

The coffee chain’s holiday selection includes a gingerbread flavored tea. The menu also featured peppermint mocha, chestnut praline latte and caramel brûlée latte. Alongside these beverages, Starbucks introduced a new selection of holiday items.

The merch collection includes reusable tumblers, mugs and accessories decorated in holiday-themed colors. Fans await the menu of festive drinks and seasonal items every November.

This is marked as a significant event in the brand’s annual calendar. The holiday menu is known for combining familiar winter flavors such as peppermint, caramel and gingerbread.

In recent years, Starbucks has made efforts to expand its app and mobile ordering options. Many users prefer to order through the company’s app, but the app’s outage on the first day of its holiday menu launch upset many customers.
