Heavy snow causes crashes, closures Wednesday

Update at 19:00: According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the following roads were closed due to bad weather and road conditions:

  • Eastbound I-70 from E470 to Burlington
  • US 287 from Kit Carson to US 50, west of Lamar
  • US 24 from east of Colorado Springs to Limon
  • US 24 from Burlington to Seibert
  • Eastbound US 36 from Byers to Last Chance
  • US 36 from Last Chance to the Kansas State Line
  • Colorado 59 from Haxtun to Kit Carson
  • Colorado 71 from last chance to Punkin Center
  • Colorado 86 from Kiowa to I-70
  • Colorado 94 from the El Paso County line to the US40/287 intersection

Update 10:25: According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the following roads were closed for accidents or snow-related “safety concerns” as of 10:25 Wednesday:

  • Westbound I-70 between Exit 260 to C-470 and Exit 259 to Morrison Road near Golden;
  • Eastbound I-70 from E-470 near Watkins to US 24 near Limon;
  • Westbound I-70 from exit 438 to Rose Avenue in Burlington to US 49 near Limon;
  • US 24 in both directions between Woodmen Road in Colorado Springs and US 40 near Limon;
  • Colorado 59 in both directions between Kit Carson and Haxtun, about 50 miles southwest of the Colorado-Nebraska border near Sterling;
  • US 36 in both directions between Last Chance in Washington County and the Colorado-Kansas border;
  • Westbound Colorado 72 between Camp Eden Road and Copperdale Lane near Coal Creek;

Update 9:10: Denver-bound US 36 has reopened at Colorado 157 and Foothills Parkway, near Boulder and Lousiville, after an early morning crash, CDOT officials said.

Eastbound I-70 also reopened around 9:05 a.m. at Colorado Mills Parkway in Lakewood after a multi-vehicle crash, CDOT officials said.

Update 8:47 is: Eastbound I-70 remains closed in Lakewood before West Colfax Avenue after a multi-vehicle crash near Denver West Marriott Boulevard, said the police. Police said they do not have an estimated reopening time for the interstate.

Both Arapahoe County and Douglas County is now on alert, according to sheriff’s officials. Anyone involved in a non-injury accident without drugs or alcohol should exchange information with the other driver and submit the accident report online.

Update 8:25: Eastbound Interstate 70 is closed between Limon and Burlington, just 13 miles west of the Colorado-Kansas border, according to Colorado Department of Transportation.

CDOT officials said the road is closed out of “safety concerns” amid the ongoing blizzard and blizzard-like conditions across the plains. There was no expected reopening time Wednesday morning.

Snow-caused accidents are also closed southbound Colorado 83 between Walden Way and Hodgen Road near Colorado Springs, US 24 in both directions in Peyton between Peyton Highway and Smith Ranch Road, and Colorado 17 in both directions near Alamosa on County Road 109.

Original story: Heavy snow across Colorado caused delays, crashes and road closures Wednesday morning, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

As of 7:45 a.m., Denver-bound US 36 was closed near Boulder and eastbound Interstate 70 was closed near Lakewood, CDOT officials said.

Eastbound US 36 is closed at Colorado 157 and Foothills Parkway, near Boulder and Lousiville, due to a crash, according to CDOT officials.

Information on the number of cars involved or an estimated reopening time was not available, but several Waze users reported a “major” accident and stationary traffic in the area.
