Flood swallows vehicle on Hawaii Island road

HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) – Flooding on Hawaii Island claimed at least one vehicle on this first alert weather day.

Robert Manion took a picture Monday of a submerged vehicle on South Kopua Road in Puna’s Eden Roc neighborhood near Mountain View.

Look closely and you can see the top of what appears to be an SUV that was caught in the flood waters.

We have no reports of injuries from the area.

Heavy rain and flooding triggered the closure of Pauahi Street, Pohaku Street, Kahikopele Street and North Kulani Road.

Officials are urging residents to be prepared for additional closures.

Hawaii News Now declared Monday and Tuesday as a first alert weather day for Hawaii Island.

A flood warning was in effect for most of Monday morning.

A flash flood warning was issued shortly after midday and was extended several times throughout the evening.
