1 dead, 1 wounded in shootout near Morehouse College; person in custody

One person was killed and another wounded in a shootout near Morehouse College on Election Day.

Officers were called out Tuesday afternoon to a gas station at the corner of Sells Avenue SW and Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard SW, across the street from Harvey Stadium on the Morehouse College campus.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, up to 10 people at the BP gas station were involved in a verbal dispute. At one point several people pulled out guns and started shooting at each other.

An 18-year-old was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, but died.

A 14-year-old was also injured and was listed in critical condition.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation, but police say the shots started as an argument.

Witnesses told FOX 5 they saw one person being arrested. Police confirmed that one person was in custody.

The names and ages of the two people who were shot have not been released, and there are no indications either is related to anyone at the Atlanta University Center.

Police say officers believe most, if not all, of the people in the altercation were armed.
