MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki explains why 80% of Georgia’s voting results will be revealed early tonight

The country is on pins and needles Election day in an incredibly tight presidential race, and while most experts warn the race likely won’t be called Tuesday night and could stretch into the coming days, there is one major battleground state that could reveal results early. Very early.

Polling stations close in Georgia at 7 p.m. ET, but unlike years past, when it took hours to accumulate the vote numbers, things will be extremely different in 2024. MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki broke it down on “Morning Joe” Tuesday morning.

“This is going to be different than we’ve experienced in the past. The law has changed in Georgia, and if it goes according to plan, we’re going to get a ton of votes in Georgia very quickly at 7:00 a.m. I’m talking about 80% of the entire vote in the first hour. 19-20. It’s a new state law. All early voting must be reported in the first hour, and we’ve seen 4 million people vote early so far.”

The 4 million early votes marked a record number of early voting for the state of Georgia. By contrast, 2.7 million early votes were cast in 2020.

Kornacki also explained what experts will be looking for when these early results from Georgia come in — specifically, whether the Atlanta metro area continues to grow.

“The blue counties in the Atlanta metro area, they’re big, they’re growing very fast, they’re diversifying, and they’re becoming more and more Democratic. More than 40% of the vote in the state comes from those counties. Biden got almost 70% across them four years ago. The question, one of the narrators for me tonight, will be, will the Blue Blob get bigger?”
