What to know

The college basketball season tips off Monday night and the Wolverines are in action. After two exhibition games, this will be the first game to count against new head coach Dusty May’s record. He has assembled a completely new team with a starting five that consists entirely of transfers. After Michigan missed the NCAA Tournament the last two years, bottoming out with an 8-24 record last season, change was needed.

Cleveland State was picked to finish seventh in the 11-team Horizon League. Michigan easily handled Oakland (picked fourth) in an exhibition. The Vikings are ranked No. 183 nationally in the kenpom.com preseason rankings. They went 21-15 last season but lost most of their production.

Guard Ebrima Dibba is in his seventh season of college. He and former Michigan point guard DeVante’ Jones were freshmen together at Coastal Carolina in 2018-19 (Michigan signed freshman Ignas Brazdeikis that year; he’s now in his sixth year as a pro). Dibba spent four seasons there, sat out the 2021-22 season and appeared in six games for South Carolina last season.

Cleveland State assistant coach Jay Shunnar is an Ann Arbor native and 2014 Michigan grad. He coached high school basketball at Skyline and Huron before becoming a grad assistant on John Beilein’s staff at Michigan. He later followed Beilein to the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

As of November 1, the Crisler Center instituted a no bag policy for fans. This means that no backpacks, purses or fanny packs are allowed inside. Exceptions for guests with medical or childcare needs (such as a diaper bag) will be processed individually upon entry. Fans can speed up the process by requesting pre-approval for such items using a online form.
