We’re talking about a team that can put together a very competitive offer for Butler. And given how things have gone lately (Golden State is 3-10 in their last 13), the Warriors should be more motivated to make a dramatic move than they were a month ago.

Stephen Curry’s prime is in the past. His career won’t last forever. And his team is unlikely to be a 2025 title contender without a real upgrade.

Butler undoubtedly would be, even with the number of players the Warriors are unloading here (new cap rules that came with the current collective bargaining agreement have made salary matching much more difficult than it used to be, especially for teams already expensive).

His defense, paired with Draymond Greens, would make Golden State harder to score on. His play would lead to more open looks for Curry.

He can’t space the floor like the Warriors have typically wanted their wings to, but Jonathan Kuminga doesn’t really help on that front either.

This move would also force Steve Kerr to shorten his rotation, something he has to do with or without a deal like this.

Yes, that’s a lot to give up. After last season, it was reasonable to be high on the respective futures of Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski. But neither has taken any major steps forward in 2024-25. And again, Curry won’t be able to stand in the head of a real title contender forever.

For Miami, this lands the two aforementioned exciting young talents. Andrew Wiggins can help the Heat compete for a play-in spot (especially in the East) in the short term. And he has a chattel contract that could later be spun into more assets if Miami wants to lean into a rebuild.

That and the first two are a solid return for an often unavailable 35-year-old who might just jump into free agency this summer.
