Housing complex may replace old Wilmington movie theater site

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The AMC Classic Wilmington 16 theater is no more, but the location along Cinema Drive has a lot going for it.

An application was submitted to the City of Wilmington for a Commercial District Mixed Use (CDMU) project that has 146 student housing units and 10,000 square feet of commercial space. The plan outlines seven 3-story buildings and one 4-story building.

It was submitted to the city by the Massachusetts-based company SVCN 2 LLC and the contractor, Paramounte Engineering Inc.

AMC Classic Wilmington 16 closed October 15, 2023.

“AMC will cease operations at the AMC Classic Wilmington 16, effective at the end of business, Sunday, Oct. 15.. AMC routinely reviews the theaters in our circuit, as well as opportunities outside our circuit, and makes decisions based on what best strengthens the business going forward,” the representative said in an email to WECT at the time.
