The big day is finally here. Merry Christmas, my dear word teachers! I hope you have a wonderful holiday, whether you’re celebrating the birth of Christ or just enjoying friends and family and gifts and the cheer of the season. However you celebrate the holidays, may they be warm and wonderful and joyful!

It’s not just Christmas, it’s also Wordle Wednesday, which means I have a special riddle for you to solve. This is a tough one, so put on your holiday thinking caps!

Christmas riddle

Santa is in his workshop,

With gifts stacked to the sky.

He calls three wise elves,

To help with his supply.

The first elf takes half of the pile,

Then adds three more gifts.

The other elf takes half of what is left,

And adds the same as before.

The third elf does the same again,

Leaving Santa with only one.

How many presents did Santa have

Before the goblins started?

I will send the answer tomorrow, but feel free to contact me with your solution at Twitter, Instagram, Blue sky or Facebook before then.

Let’s solve this Wordle!

Word analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

I went with another wintry opening guess today, but SNOWY was not a good start to my Wordling this Christmas Day. With 207 solutions remaining, I plugged in CRATE and cut it down to just two. Impulsively I guessed SPARE without even coming up with other possible solutions. Alas, Wordle was DEL. Well yes!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot who only took three tries today. Sigh.

How to play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 point; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent, you get 1 point. If you stand straight, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or play for a new score every day.
  • Friday is 2XP, which means you double your points – positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running account or just play day by day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “share” comes from Old English “scearu”meaning “a cut, division, or part.” This is derived from Proto-Germanic “scaro”which refers to something cut or separated. The root “happens-“ in Proto-Indo-European means “to cut” or “to divide.” Over time, the meaning evolved to imply parts or allocations of something, as well as the concept of distributing or participating in something with others.
