Season 2 of ‘Squid Game’ is out this week – here’s everything to know

As one of Netflix’s most anticipated releases of 2024, Play octopus returns this week for its second season. Main star Lee Jung-jae is back in the arena and his character is determined to bring the deadly game to an end once and for all.

The first season of the South Korean drama introduced the deadly game, but in season 2, former winner Seong Gi-hun returns three years later with a new mission: to shut it down for good. As player 456, he must navigate a new set of games – as well as the infamous Red Light, Green Light from Season 1 – while confronting Front Man, the sinister mastermind behind Play octopus.

Play octopus Season 2 premieres on Netflix on Thursday, December 26 at 3 a.m. ET / midnight PT. All seven episodes will be available to stream at once.

What will Play octopus Season 2 Be About?

“Three years after winning the Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the United States and comes back with a new resolution in mind,” reads the official synopsis of Season 2. “Gi-hun dives into the mysterious survival game once again and starts another life-or-death game with new contestants coming together to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.”

During Netflix’s Fall Edit event in November, showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed why Gi-hun returned to the Squid Game after barely surviving the first time, winning the grand prize of 45.6 billion Korean Won.

“He wants to return to a ‘normal’ so-called life. (But) there is something inside him that has already been destroyed where he cannot go back to the way he was before,” he explained. Although Gi-hun wants to reconnect with his daughter, he “understands … that he has changed in a way where (it is) no longer possible.”
