When to expect showers, storms over Houston

HOUSTON – The talk this holiday week has been what the time of the cold front on Christmas Eve is and whether it will spoil the Christmas Day plans.

NEED HOLIDAY PLANS? Holiday events in Houston 2024: Ultimate guide to light displays, markets and more

The answer is definitely, NO!

Storm timing:

The good news, as I said above, most of the noisy end of this front will move through overnight when most of us, apart from Santa and the reindeer, will be asleep.

First, let’s talk about what to expect through most of Christmas Eve.

Tuesday morning:

The theme ahead of the front’s arrival is warm, cloudy and windy. I also wouldn’t be shocked to see patchy dense fog on Tuesday morning.

However, the chances of rain will be on the light side with a few isolated showers drifting in from the coast.

Tuesday afternoon/evening:

A few streamer showers but the front will start to move in by midday across our northern counties.

It looks like most of the action will fall along the leading edge of the front with a series of showers/thunderstorms.

Accommodation into Christmas:

This is when most of the area will see the action. Expect to hear noisy storms moving quickly from northwest to southeast as the front passes overhead.

There is a small chance to see some strong gusts and even some hail as the storms pass.

Christmas morning:

The line of storms was supposed to move offshore at 5-6 AM and while some roads/grass will be wet, rain chances will drop to 20% or less.

The rest of Christmas Day:

We should be fine for the rest of Christmas/Hanukkah, heat in the mid 70’s, mix of clouds and sun and except for some remaining puddles, no rain!
