Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb has a chance to set a first 5 year reception record

The Dallas Cowboys have had some of the best offenses in the NFL over the last half decade. A big contributing factor has been All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. In his first four seasons, he was named the Pro Bowl three times and also earned multiple All-Pro nods. In short, the guy is special.

Lamb is having another big year as he enters Week 16 ranked third in receiving yards (1,089) and receptions (94). Speaking of receptions, with three games left in the season, Lamb has a chance to set an NFL record. He currently has 489 receptions through his first five years in the league. He needs 22 catches before the end of the season to break the all-time record set by Michael Thomas (510).

That means Lamb would have to average just over seven receptions per game. play the rest of the way to set the record. Through 14 games, Lamb is averaging just under seven catches a game. So he’s basically on the exact pace he needs to hit the benchmark. Breaking down his career, it would be pretty impressive if Lamb rewrote the history books in this category.

In Lamb’s rookie year, quarterback Dak Prescott missed the final 11 games with an ankle injury. However, Lamb still hauled in 74 receptions on the year and just topped the 1,000-yard mark. In 2022, Prescott was out for five games with a broken thumb. Lamb caught 49 passes over that span, which included three games with double-digit receptions (finished the year with 107). Again, Prescott will miss significant time in 2024 with a torn hamstring. In the six games he’s missed so far, Lamb has accumulated 41 receptions, leading Cooper Rush, which is on pace to set that record.

The most important thing for the Cowboys is to finish the season strong despite missing the postseason. If Lamb can set a record in the process, that would be sweet, too.
