LANDOVER, Md. – The one Eagles already clinched a playoff spot and can win the NFC East and no worse than no. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs with one win over Washington’s commanders on Sunday.

But that proved more difficult than expected after QB Jalen Hurts left the game midway through the first quarter to be evaluated for a concussion. He did not return, and was ejected in the second quarter.

The Eagles have Saquon Barkley, who rushed for 122 yards on 13 carries in the first half, including a 68-yard TD run with 2:18 left in the first quarter. That gave the Eagles a 14-point lead, but Washington had cut the Eagles lead to 21-14 at halftime.

Kenny Pickett replaced Hurts and went 8-for-11 for 84 yards in the first half with a touchdown and interception.

So the Commanders got a full dose of Barkley, who entered the game with 11 not afraid to set his career high for rushes in a season, which he passed Sunday. Barkley had 295 carries in 2022 with the Giants, rushing for his previous career high of 1,312 yards, an average of 4.4 yards per carry. carry.

Barkley entered the game with 1,688 yards rushing on 285 carries, a 5.9-yard average. He is at 1,810 yards on 298 balls at the break.

In the end, it wasn’t enough as the Eagles fell 35-33 when Jayden Daniels threw a 10-yard TD pass to Jamison Crowder with 6 seconds left. That ended the Eagles’ 10-game winning streak.

Olamide Zaccheau’s second touchdown of the game, from 49 yards out, gave Washington its first lead of the game, 28-27, with 9:06 left in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles were already shorthanded in the secondary when safety CJ Gardner-Johnson was ejected after picking up his second personal foul penalty of the game in the third quarter.

The first half ended with kicker Jake Elliott missing a 56-yard field goal. He is now 0-for-6 from 50 yards and longer this season.

Elliott hit a 23-yarder on the Eagles’ opening drive of the third quarter. That was set up by two pass interference penalties on Washington’s Marcus Lattimore while covering AJ Brown that covered 38 and 23 yards.

That gave the Eagles a 24-14 lead.

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts was ruled out with a concussion after leaving midway through the first quarter to be evaluated for a concussion. Kenny Pickett took over. Hurts was ejected in the second quarter.

This is the first time this season that Hurts has missed more than one game with an injury.

The Eagles found a way to compensate for Jalen Hurts’ absence: handing the ball off to Saquon Barkley. Barkley answered the Commanders’ TD with a 68-yard touchdown run, giving the Eagles a 21-7 lead with 2:18 left in the first quarter.

That gives Barkley 109 yards rushing on 7 carries – in the first quarter.

Jalen Hurts left the game to be evaluated for a concussion in the first quarter. He was replaced by Kenny Pickett, who capped the drive with a 3-yard TD pass to AJ Brown for a 14-0 Eagles lead.

Pickett was the QB on the Eagles’ next series, and he threw an interception to Frankie Luvu at the Eagles’ 25. Washington converted on Jayden Daniels’ 6-yard TD pass to Jamison Crowder with 3:12 left in the first quarter.

The Eagles did something they haven’t done all season by scoring a touchdown on their opening drive. The Eagles started at midfield after the Commanders were stopped on 4th-and-1 from their 49.

Saquon Barkley took over from there and ran for 19 and 13 yards before taking the ball in from the 2. Eagles lead 7-0, 11:15 left in first quarter.

The Eagles were back in business after Jalen Carter forced a Brian Robinson fumble to start Washington’s next possession. Nolan Smith recovered on the Eagles’ 43.

Edge rusher Bryce Huff was not activated from injured reserve after the Eagles opened its 21-day practice window to start the week.

PR/WR Britain Covey was also ruled out for a third straight week with a neck injury, although he was a full participant in practice all week. That means Cooper DeJean is the punt returner. Safety Sydney Brown, listed as questionable with a concussion, was cleared to play.

The Eagles’ other inactives are QB Tanner McKee, CB Eli Ricks, an offensive linemen Nick Gates, Trevor Keegan and Darian Kinnard.

Fullback Khari Blasingame is practice squad height. It is his third and final raise. The Eagles would have to add him to the 53-man roster in order for him to play again.

For the Commanders, former Eagles tight end Zach Ertz, listed as questionable with a concussion, was cleared to play.

Last week was an AJ Brown passing game. This week was supposed to be a Saquon Barkley running game against the 25th-ranked rush defense. A close game into the fourth quarter should give Barkley the chance for a 150-plus yard game. It will also allow the Eagles to pull away.

The choice: Eagles 31, Commanders 20
