Gone are the days of endless scrolling through home listings on Zillow, only filtering by location and budget. The property center has continued to build on its search capabilities, enabling locations to be found by commute time and nearby schools and even specific qualities such as solar panels and induction hobs. Some of its users have even searched for things as strange as “slide” and “laser tag.” No judgement. Despite these extremely unique inquiries, many home buyers had overlapping priorities in 2024. Here are four of the most sought-after home attributes from the year.

Ranch style homes

Home shoppers in 2024 were enthralled by the idea of not having to walk up and down stairs. When it came to architectural styles, ranch houses led the way for their charm and one-story convenience, followed by mid-century modern and contemporary designs. The results made us look back at designer Amber Sokolowski’s sweet SoCal home, which she added some serious curb appeal by painting the facade Dunn-Edwards’ black tie.

Lakeside Retreats and Cabins

The pandemic sparked a buzz around scenic escapes, and it hasn’t stopped yet. Search for lakeside retreats and cabins remained strong this year. Destination wise, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Lake Tahoe, Nevada; and Long Island, New York, topped the list, along with lakeside favorites like Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota; Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri; and Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. Inquiries for “barndominiums” (barn-shaped houses with large open floor plans) and horse properties were not far behind.

Zillow’s data team showed a growing interest in flexible housing, particularly duplexes and lofts, the latter of which could be achieved in any loft space with a ladder and a little creativity.

A swimming pool is nice and all, but what people worry about the most is where they store the things they want to keep dry: the garage. Patios were another in-demand search, and we know that even a basic concrete can act as an oasis with the right outdoor rug and furniture.
