Jayden Quaintance records third double-double to lead Arizona State past UMass

Trap game? No doubt. But Arizona State Sun Devils men’s basketball prevailed, turning back Massachusetts 78-62 on Saturday afternoon in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Coach Bobby Hurley’s side had lost their last game before the Christmas break in the last five years and this also marked the third trip across the country this season.

The Minutemen led 46-41 seven minutes into the second half, but ASU wiped it away with a 19-3 run, a 3-pointer from BJ Freeman that gave ASU (9-2) a 60-49 lead, and the Sun The Devils never looked back.

Freshman Jayden Quaintance chalked up his third career double-double, finishing with a career-high 19 points and adding 11 rebounds. He came in second in the nation in blocked shots and added four to his total. Basheer Jihad scored a team-high 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Alston Mason had 13 points, five rebounds and six assists.

Guard Rahsool Diggins led UMass with 24 points. Sophomore Akil Watson, who played at ASU last year as a true freshman, chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.

ASU finished with a 44-33 advantage on the boards and a 38-30 edge in points in the paint. The Sun Devils shot 45.2% (28-for-62), while UMass shot 38% (23-for-60).

The game marked the last before ASU begins Big 12 play Dec. 31 at Brigham Young (9-2).
