ESCANABA — Escanaba Public Safety officers battled a fire at the Stonehouse restaurant in Escanaba Saturday morning.

Escanaba firefighters, along with area fire departments, braved cold temperatures to battle the blaze. At the time of the fire the temperature was 12 degrees F. The Stonehouse is a popular restaurant in the area located on South Lincoln Road. As a result of its location, the highway was closed while firefighters were at the scene and traffic was being diverted.

The fire apparently started around 6 o’clock on Saturday. An eyewitness said she first saw smoke and flames coming through the roof of the building at 6:15. The first Escanaba Public Safety officers arrived on scene moments later.

Thick smoke continued to pour from the roof of the building as firefighters pumped large amounts of water onto the building.

See Monday’s edition of the Daily Press for additional coverage of the Stonehouse fire.
