Lee’s Summit teacher charged with child pornography

LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. (KCTV) – A Lee’s Summit West High School teacher has been indicted in federal court on charges related to child pornography.

Seth Brummond, 37, of Greenwood, Mo., was charged in a two-count criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Mo., on Thursday, Dec. 19.

Brummond will have his first court hearing on January 3, 2025.

The federal criminal complaint charges Brummond with one count of distributing child pornography over the Internet and one count of possession of child pornography from Sept. 1 to Dec. 18, 2024.

According to court documents, investigators received an online tip Sept. 8 that a user (later identified as Brummond) uploaded 12 videos of child pornography via the Kik Messenger application.

On Thursday, Dec. 19, Lee’s Summit police placed Brummond’s home under surveillance to serve federal search warrants. The officers followed Brummond as he left the home, and at about 6, the officers conducted a traffic stop and placed Brummond. The police seized his iPhone as well as a computer tower in the trunk of his car.

Lee’s Summit School District released a statement that Brummond is on administrative leave.

Lee’s Summit R-7 School District is aware of a federal criminal complaint charging Mr. Brummond for charges related to child pornography. These allegations are serious and we are responding fully to this situation. The district is cooperating with the federal investigation and has put Mr. Brummond on administrative leave per district policy.

We have been informed that there is no current evidence linking LSR7 students to the allegations at this time. However, we encourage any parent or guardian to contact our administration, local police department or anonymous Safe Schools tip line anytime they believe they have relevant information affecting student safety.

Our focus right now is to support the well-being of students who may be concerned about this news with counseling and community resources, in addition to making plans to ensure that learning is not disrupted when students return from winter break.
