Who is Chip Roy? Texas Rep Tears GOP Over Debt Ceiling Deal
Roy’s fiery criticism of his party’s fiscal policies and Trump’s threats of retaliation have deepened the rift ahead of critical discussions on the spending bill.

Texas representative Chip Roy has ignited a heated feud within the Republican Party targeting his colleagues and former President Donald Trump over the federal party. Debt ceiling negotiations. Roy’s fiery criticism of his party’s fiscal policies and Trump’s threats of retaliation have deepened the rift ahead of critical discussions on the spending bill.
In an impassioned tirade, Roy accused his Republican colleagues of giving up fiscal responsibilityand shouted: “You’ve added to the debt since you regained the majority on November 5. It’s embarrassing. It’s shameful.”
He didn’t stop there, blasting the proposed bill for its $5 trillion addition to the national debt. “Yes, I think this bill is better than it was yesterday in certain respects. But to take this bill yesterday and congratulate yourself because it’s shorter on the sides but increases the debt by $5 trillion is unfathomable ,” he said.

“I am absolutely sickened by a party that campaigns on fiscal responsibility and has the audacity to go up to the American people and say you think this is fiscally responsible,” Roy continued. “It’s completely ridiculous.”
Roy’s pointed remarks drew a quick and sharp response from Trump, who took to Truth Social to label the congressman an obstructionist. “Very unpopular Texas ‘Congressman’ Chip Roy stands as usual in the way of another big Republican victory – all for cheap publicity for himself,” Trump wrote.

Roy said his position on raising the debt limit is “simple.” “I’m not going to raise or suspend the debt ceiling (accumulate more debt) without significant and real savings attached to it,” Roy said. “I have negotiated to that end.”
Trump escalated the feud with a follow-up post threatening to endorse primary challengers. “Republican obstructionists must be done away with,” Trump declared. “I hope some talented challengers get ready in the great state of Texas to go after Chip in the Primary. He won’t stand a chance!”

Roy and his fellow conservatives have fiercely opposed any increase in the debt limit throughout their time in Congress, but they were blindsided by Trump’s last-minute question on Wednesday.
“The very unpopular ‘Congressman’ from Texas, Chip Roy, is as usual standing in the way of another big Republican victory – all for cheap publicity for himself. Republican obstructionists must be dealt with,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
