St. Louis, Mo — A mild and dry start to the week will give way to unsettled weather Tuesday night, with a 60-70% chance of rain and thunderstorms expected over southeastern Missouri and southern Illinois. Residents along I-44 in Missouri and I-55 in Illinois should prepare for wet roads and lower visibility during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in St. Louis storms may begin developing late Tuesday and continue into early Wednesday morning. Although severe weather is not expected, isolated thunderstorms may produce locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Temperatures will also drop overnight, dropping into the low 30s to 40s.

Before the storms arrive, Monday and Tuesday will remain mostly mild. Monday’s forecast includes clear skies with highs reaching the 60s in most areas, although cooler conditions persist in northeastern Missouri and central Illinois. Tuesday will start out dry but become increasingly cloudy as temperatures reach the low 50s.

Tuesday evening, the chance of rain increases as a low pressure system pushes through the region, bringing widespread precipitation south of I-44 and east of I-55. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time on Tuesday evening and use caution on slippery roads.

Looking ahead, Tuesday brings relief as skies begin to clear and temperatures drop into the mid-40s. However, a colder trend will follow, with nighttime lows dipping into the upper 20s and daytime lows in the 30s later in the week.
