Winter weather advisory warns of icy conditions for NY and NJ areas

A winter weather advisory is still in effect for our area from 22 Sunday evening to Monday at 11, the national weather service informs.

In New Jersey, Western Passaic County is affected, as are New York, Northern Westchester, Orange, Putnam and Rockland Counties.

“We’re expecting quite a bit of snow and some icy travel to the north, which is why they’ve issued that advisory,” FOX 5 NEW Audrey Puente said.

According to the National Weather Service, light snow Sunday night will change to freezing rain over parts of our local area into early Monday morning.

Millions of people in Northeast and middle of the Atlantic Ocean facing their next round of rain, snow and ice that could lead to some travel problems as we close for the weekend and begin the last full work week before Christmas holiday.

The FOX Forecast Center said this rapid outbreak of winter weather and rain starting Sunday stems from the same system that brought a ice storm to parts of the Midwest this weekend.

As the storm reaches the northeast, it will encounter the last of an area of arctic air parked over the region, which will allow for a mix of snow and/or freezing rain to develop across inland parts of the Northeast on Sunday and into Monday.

For areas along the east coast, the precipitation “will continue to fall in the form of rain because we have it win right next to Atlantic Ocean,” FOX Weather Meteorologist Kendall Smith said. “So the southerly flow is helping to keep things relatively mild. But what’s going to happen in the higher elevations is we’re going to see that transition to snow where temperatures are going to drop either at or below freezing.”

A few inches of snow is possible, but mainly in the higher elevations across parts of Pennsylvania and New Yorkas well as portions of Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut in New England.

Rain is expected closer to the Interstate 95 corridor.

“We have the chance for some people close New York City tri-state area to see snow,” Smith continued. “But I think we in New York City are going to miss it again. It’s a big frustration.”
