A mix of snow, rain and ice impact travel for millions in the Northeast along the I-95 corridor

NEW YORK – Millions of people across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic faced a messy mix of rain, snow and ice that slowed travel Monday as the last full work week before the busy Christmas holiday season got under way.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, the latest round of precipitation was from the same storm system that produced an ice storm in parts of the Midwest over the weekend.

As the storm moved out of the Midwest, it brought wintry weather to the higher elevations of the Appalachians, the mid-Atlantic, and the Northeast.

A photo from The Plains, Virginia, showed snow-covered sidewalks, grassy surfaces and some roads in the region.

And a video shot in Pennsylvania showed snow falling from the sky in Duncansville on Sunday.

The storm then eventually moved into the Northeast later Sunday and into the overnight hours, affecting the Monday morning commute for millions of people.

Schools were also affected, with several districts in New York and Connecticut announcing they were closed or had a delayed start due to the potentially hazardous travel conditions.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, the storm system encountered colder Arctic air, allowing the messy wintry mix to develop.

While it was primarily a heavy rain event along the busy Interstate 95 corridor from Boston to New York City, some slick spots were reported, leading to slower commute times Monday morning.

Winter Weather Advisories that stretched from Pennsylvania through parts of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island have since expired, but forecasters warn that conditions could still be slippery. They urged caution while traveling.

The storm is now pushing offshore into the Atlantic, allowing the winter weather to relax. However, some rain is expected to continue along parts of the I-95 corridor.

As this first round of rain comes to an end, the FOX Forecast Center continues to monitor a few more storm systems that could impact early Christmas travel across the Northeast.
