Former NFL referee, longtime Herald columnist Jim Tunney dies at age 95 – Monterey Herald

Jim Tunney, a longtime educator and NFL referee, died peacefully at his Pebble Beach home Thursday night, according to his son-in-law.

Tunney was also a longtime sports columnist for the Monterey Herald, offering his observations on sports, teamwork and sharing his memories in his weekly Tunneyside columns. He was 95.

Tunney was an NFL official for 31 years, working Super Bowls VI, XI and XII. He was named an alternate in Super Bowl XVIII.

Tunney wrote four books, including “It’s The Will, Not The Skill” in 2004 and “101 Best of Tunney Side of Sports” in 2014.
