Cody Rhodes successfully retained the WWE Undisputed Championship over Kevin Owens on Saturday through admittedly questionable means.

Late in a grueling main event, Owens introduced a steel chair. With two referees knocked out, Rhodes stopped the challenger from using it, then proceeded to deliver the Cross Rhodes on it. He dragged the chair out of the ring to hide the evidence, made the pin and Charles Robinson counted the fall before declaring The American Nightmare the winner.

The match was great as expected, but the ending was a bit strange.

Perhaps it was meant to promote the “Kevin’s right” narrative, but it came across as if Rhodes was cheating to win the match. First-time viewers who didn’t know any better might even think that Rhodes was the bad guy in this story based on the fact that he was actually the one who cheated his way to victory.

The question becomes how to follow up on the finish.

Owens is going to trumpet his version of things, which is that Rhodes is the cheat and the deceiver, not him. He’s going to demand a rematch and probably get it at the Royal Rumble. But will he ever win, is the question.

Top moments and takeaways

  • The winged eagle version of the WWE Championship is far too beautiful to put back in a vault somewhere. A flawless design from the late, great Reggie Parks.
  • Ventura thrived on commentary. There are some who are just born to be color commentators, and The Body is one of them. He meshed surprisingly well with McAfee and Cole.
  • Ventura planted the seeds for the Rhodes match against Gable, and the ankle injury from that played a role in the contest. That came to fruition when The American Nightmare executed a tope sucida but came up with the same ankle.
  • Owens mocked Rhodes’ father, the late Dusty. That earned him a Bionic Elbow from the champion.
  • Rhodes delivered an RKO to Owens on the announce table, who didn’t budge.
