Former Maple Leafs $21M forward placed on waivers

Engvall, 28, had 3 goals and 6 points in 20 games for the New York Islanders this season. Engvall has also played six games in the AHL with New York’s Bridgeport affiliate.

Engvall has already been on waivers once this season, and has not been picked up in October.

Last season, Engvall had 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in 74 games played for the New York Islanders.

Engvall had 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points in 112 games played for the Islanders in his short time there.

Engvall was a seventh pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and made his NHL debut in 2019.

He played four seasons with Toronto before was traded to the Islanders in 2023 for a third-round pick.

Engvall had 60 goals and 126 points in 338 games played in six seasons with both the Maple Leafs and Islanders. His best season came in 2021-22 when he scored 35 points and followed that up with a career-best 17 goals in 2022-23.

Engvall is in the second year of a seven-year contract he signed in the summer of 2023, and he never lived up to the expectations that Lou Lamoriello and company demanded of him.

Wahlstrom is also placed on waivers.

The 24-year-old Wahlstrom has 2 goals and 4 points in 27 games for the New York Islanders this season.

Wahlstrom is a former first round pick of the New York Islanders who was drafted 11th overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

A graduate of the United States National Team Development Program (NTDP) and Boston College of the NCAA, Wahlstrom spent six seasons with the Islanders.

For his career, he has 36 goals and 35 assists for 71 points in 220 games played in the NHL, all with New York.

It remains to be seen if any team will be willing to claim the veteran forward off waivers at such a high price, but for a team desperate enough to add Engvall’s potential, it could end up being a steal.
