The Travis Hunter family tree: Meet football-playing brother, parents and more about Colorado star’s Florida roots

Travis Hunter took home the Heisman Trophy Saturday night, becoming just the second player in Colorado history to do so, joining running back Rashaan Salaam, who won in 1994.1. He is also the first two-way star to win it since Michigan’s Charles Woodson in 1997.

The Colorado two-way star won in the closest Heisman race since 2009, beating Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

Travis Hunter’s parents

Hunter’s parents are Travis Hunter Sr. and Ferrante Edmonds.

Hunter’s father ran track and played football for Boynton Beach High School in Florida. Hunter Sr. once ran ran a 10.82-second 100-meter dash as a 15-year-old freshman and was on a 4×100-meter relay that set a school record.

Hunter Sr. also played semi-professional football for the Florida Football Alliance and the Southern States Football League. He won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award for the SSFL in 2007. He was not present at the ceremony on Saturday night, saying he would watch the award ceremony from home.

“I don’t want to go,” his father said via Palm Beach Post. “I want to be there when he gets married and when he is appointed. I want to watch this from home.”

In March of this year, Hunter surprised his mother with a new house in Savannah, Georgia.

Travis Hunter’s brother

Hunter has a younger brother named Trayvis. He plays high school football for Effingham County in Springfield, Georgia.

Trayvis is a sophomore from the class of 2027 and not have a 247Sports evaluation yet. According to MaxPreps, he caught 11 receptions for 203 yards his freshman year in 2023, including five total tackles. In 2024, he added 36 receptions for 496 yards.

Where is Travis Hunter from?

Hunter originally grew up in West Palm Beach Florida. When he was in high school, he moved to Suwanee, Georgia, where he played high school football at Collins Hill High School. He credited his mother in his Heisman speech for moving him to Georgia and out of the “bad area” he previously lived in in Florida.

Hunter was a highly regarded recruit from the class of 2022. A former 5-star prospect per 247Sports and the overall no. 1 player in the county, Hunter committed to Florida State for most of his recruiting process, but during the early signing period in December 2021, he shocked the college football world when he transferred to HBCU Jackson State and signed with Deion Sanders’ team.

Hunter signed as the nation’s top cornerback and top prospect out of the state of Georgia in the 2022 class.
