Reddit founder and UVA alum Alexis Ohanian donates “gift of transformation” to UVA Athletics

The Virginia Cavaliers athletic department announced Thursday night that Virginia alum and Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian has made a major donation to the UVA women’s basketball program. In fact, according to Virginia Athletics, his gift is the second largest ever to women’s athletics at UVA.

“Alexis’ commitment to women’s sports is unparalleled,” said Virginia Director of Athletics Carla Williams i sports department’s press release. “He sees the value and he is willing to invest. His support will help attract championship talent to the University of Virginia and specifically to UVA Women’s Basketball. I am extremely grateful for his foresight and commitment to the future of women’s athletics at the University of Virginia .”

Ohanian is a longtime supporter of women’s athletics. He’s Serena Williams’ husband, of course, and he’s been to a number of UVA women’s games this season. He has been particularly active on social media, praising them to his 564,000 Twitter followers. Now Ohanian has put his money down to support them even more.

“That’s probably the question I get asked the most these days — when are you going to make a move in women’s basketball?” Ohanian said in the same release. “I am proud to support the women’s program at my alma mater with this donation. It’s time to bring the nation’s best hoops talent to Charlottesville and win some championships for the next four years.”

This support for Coach Mox’s team adds further momentum to a program that has been on the rise since her hiring a few years ago. The ‘Hoos are 6-5 so far this season and have suffered a few bumps in the road. But with Kymora Johnson leading the way and this monetary support from Ohanian, it looks like the program will continue to grow for years to come.
