Pete Carroll wants another NFL head coaching job

Last year, the Seahawks unceremoniously kicked head coach Pete Carroll to the curb. This year, he’s looking for another NFL ride.

Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports Carroll wants back in. Which honestly means that Carroll’s agent specifically told Schefter this in hopes that Schefter would broadcast it to the world in hopes of creating public opinion. So will Carroll’s agent owes Schefter big time.

And it is how the sausage is made.

Carroll has specifically expressed interest in the Bears’ vacancy, according to the report/strategic leak. Which obviously doesn’t matter unless the Bears have interest in Carroll.

Given that the team’s goal no. 1 (we’re told) is to hire a coach who will get the most out of quarterback Caleb Williams, a defensive coach whose best NFL teams were run by that side of the ball most likely won’t be the right guy to draft pair with Williams.

Carroll could be a good fit elsewhere, depending on the specific needs and goals of the franchise. He is only a year older than Bill Belichick. Unlike Belichick, Carroll has actually been successful without Tom Brady on his team.

It’s hard to blame Carroll’s agent for trying to use the media to get the word out about Carroll. That is the agent’s job. However, it is not the media’s job to get involved quid pro quo PR for coaching candidates.

It’s one thing to express authentic and organic and unsolicited opinions, as we did recently when we questioned whether Brian Flores’ lawsuit against the NFL and several teams will stand in the way of another head-coaching opportunity. It’s another thing to have your threads pulled by “sources” (probably just one source, but doing it in the plural always sounds better) who want to get their backs scratched – and who will pay back, possibly many times over.
