THE FREEZE OF 2021

According to National Center for Environmental Information, a winter deep freeze took over all of Texas, putting every county under a winter storm warning. This happened from 11.-20. February 2021, making it the coldest winter storm since December 1989.

Sleet and freezing rain began to fall in the Lone Star State on February 10th. The turning point occurred on February 14, when the arctic cold front crept in. The severe frost lasted almost 9 days and the last severe frost warning expired on Saturday 20 February. The freeze left over 10 million people without power.

WINTER IN TEXAS 2024-2025

According to Farmer’s AlmanacTexas is looking for a dry winter in the 24-25 season. Temperatures will rise and snowfall will be low for the Lone Star State. La Niña will be the reason for the higher temperatures and lower sweat in Texas. Texans within the “cold zone” of the Panhandle will see their coldest temperatures in January and February 2025.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR WEST TEXAS?

Although most of Texas experiences a moderate winter, West Texas is a little different. They predict that the further west you go, the weather will get cooler and wetter. It appears that the Permian Basin will sit on the mild and dry side of that line.

Maybe a mild winter is just what we need this year. Considering my household was out of power for 5 days, I still feel vulnerable to the big freeze of 2021.
