Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero is bisexual in Wicked, Bowen Yang believes

Saturday Night Live regular Bowen Yang has shared his suspicion that Evil heartthrob Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, is “canonically bisexual”.

Speaking exclusively to PinkNews, Yang suggested that Fiyero has always been a bit fruity.

“I think Fiyero is canonically bisexual, but I feel like this is something that kind of went over my head when I grew up watching Evilin that he’s like, ‘Well Fiyero is just so good-looking and everybody loves him,’ but it’s because he kind of leans into these narcissistic qualities, or these seemingly narcissistic qualities about him,” Bowen explained.

“But no, something about Jonny in this is so… engrossing. It’s lovely,” he coquettishly added Evil‘s release on Friday (November 22).

Bowen’s co-star Bronwyn James, who plays Glinda’s second right hand, jokingly agreed: “It’s lovely. Lovely.”

Last month, Bowen teased that Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero exudes “bisexual energy”. Evil. That said, Fiyero’s role in the The Wizard of Oz prequel is as the love interest for both Glinda and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo).

Pfannee, on the other hand, is explicitly queer and becomes overwhelmingly confused upon the arrival of Fiyero at Shiz University. Honestly, we can see why.

Yang and James continued to explain why they think the story about Evil has resonated with queer people for nearly three decades. And no, it’s not just because of the undeniable Sapphic chemistry between Elphaba and Glinda (although that’s certainly part of the appeal).

“It’s one of those stories that has such an overarching moral about similar, someone becoming different, and someone being ostracized for something they’re born with,” James shared.

“I think, especially with queer people as an umbrella term, that many of us can relate to it, and that’s why Evil has stood the test of time for so long because we can all look at Elphaba and see her fight and see how she sticks to her guns and no matter what, people are damn, she’s going to stick with her integrity .”

In real life, both Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella.

“It’s also a story about reconciling what the world tells you you are and who you know yourself to be, and that’s also part of being queer,” Yang said.

“It’s just rejecting certain things that people project onto you and you’re like, ‘I’m me. I’m part of this community of other people, but I’m also individual in a lot of ways, and that’s Elphaba, and it’s Glinda.”

During their interview with PinkNews, Glinda’s on-screen disciples talked about the experience of learning the soon-to-be-iconic bookography from “What is this feeling?” performance.

“As it’s burned into my memory, I’ll be 90 years old on my deathbed, like…” Brown laughed and hummed the song. “I’ll do it in bed tonight now.”

“I mean, we learned that beforehand,” Yang revealed. We were given a crash course in all choreography by the most incredible team of dancers, choreographers who literally had hordes of people to deal with and communicate with.

“We learned it all and then during the shoot they refreshed us and tweaked things, tweaked things. I mean tweak is the big word there, they were so patient with us and made sure we could pull it off.”

“I think we did pretty well, actually,” Brown added.

Evil will be released in theaters on Friday, November 22.
