John Fetterman offers his office bathroom to Sarah McBride as GOP lawmakers continue to target her

Late. John Fetterman (D., Pa.) has offered his office bathroom to Delaware State Sen. Sarah McBride, elected this month as the first openly transgender member of Congress, as House Republicans prepare to block her from using women’s restrooms in Congress. Capitol.

McBride said Wednesday that she will follow the rules, even if she disagrees with them.

“I’m not here to fight about bathrooms,” McBride said. “I’m here to fight for Delawareans and to lower costs for families.”

Fetterman’s offer comes as the incoming Delaware lawmaker faces attacks from Republican lawmakers, including a bill by U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R., SC), who would restrict lawmakers from using single-sex facilities “other than those corresponding to their biological sex,” was clearly aimed at McBride.

“There’s no job I’m afraid of losing if it requires me to demean someone,” Fetterman X said in a post on Wednesday. “If it’s a deciding issue for a voter, there will be another candidate. We have a bathroom in my office that anyone is welcome to use, including Representative-elect Sarah McBride.”

Fetterman has routinely touted himself as a staunch defender of transgender rights. His post came the same day that House Rep. Mike Johnson (R., La.) announced — on Transgender Day of Remembrance — that transgender people are not allowed to use Capitol bathrooms that matches their gender identity.

In one statement X WednesdayMcBride said she hopes her future housemates can understand the reasons she was chosen for this new position.

“I have loved seeing these qualities in the future colleagues that I have met, and I look forward to seeing these qualities in each member in January,” McBride said. “I hope that all my colleagues will seek to do the same with me.”

GOP lawmakers’ targeting of McBride follows President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign, which focused heavily on transgender people. Ads routinely aired in Pennsylvania targeting Vice President Kamala Harris’ stance on transgender rights have been credited – including by Fetterman – for potentially contributing to Trump’s victory.
