Halle Berry files emotional statement in custody battle with ex

The exes married in 2013 and separated in 2016. Their divorce dragged on for years and was not finalized until late 2023.

Months later, Halle was back in court accusing Olivier of not following the terms of their divorce settlement. She asked the court to grant her full legal custody of Maceo, which would allow her to make all major life decisions for the child.

Olivier opposed the request. He accused Halle of using her wealth to drag him in and out of court.

She said: “I think Olivier is not cooperative. I have experienced and perceived Olivier to have poor parental judgment.”

Halle continued, “Based on our communications, I believe his defiance of me interferes with his ability to think rationally and engage in non-hostile, productive and peaceful communications. Olivier continues to engage in aggressive and non-productive discussions, which often ends with him threatening and belittling me. Olivier’s behavior delays necessary decision-making for Maceo and interferes with critical and time-sensitive interventions.”

Halle said she has been trying to resolve the issues with Olivier for months, but her efforts have been in vain.

The actress said she denies Olivier’s claims that he has collaborated with her. She said it took three years, two mediations and extensive legal involvement for Olivier to accept that their son was seeing a therapist.

She said it took two years, two mediations and lawyers to reach a decision about Maceo’s education. She said reaching those agreements cost hundreds of thousands in legal fees and costs. Halle said it also cost “time (anything from months to years), which in turn delayed” important decisions for Maceo.

“I have never once stated or even hinted that I would ever send Maceo to boarding school or a treatment facility. This was made clear to Olivier’s lawyers. I have fought for years for every moment of make-up time for the custody time I have been forced to do to lose for work reasons. I have spent thousands of dollars fighting for make-up time orders.”

Halle also accused Olivier of keeping her in the dark about Maceo’s football activities. “I didn’t go to practice or games because Olivier refused to give me the information,” she said.

Olivier filed a fully redacted statement in the case.
